Observing Students' Ability to Reason about Data

The Streams of Data team met with their advisory board on February 4, to discuss plans for their next phase of classroom research. In this phase, they will be showing students different types of data visualizations, including time series graphs and maps, to better understand how they make sense of data in these formats. This work will help to shape the latter phases of the project, in which students will be collecting and visualizing their own datasets, and comparing them with professionally-collected data.

Read about our first phase of classroom research, where we observed students’ ability to reason about data, free from the artificial barriers created when data is framed using formal scientific terminology and measurement tools.

UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 we were unable to visit classrooms in person. We are now looking into the possibility of observing students virtually.
